6th Grade Syllabus 2020-2021 School Year

Welcome Students and Parents!

Class Description:

The sixth grade English/Language Arts course provides a balance of reading, writing, language, speaking, and listening skills.  Students will master essential vocabulary, comprehension skills, and strategies while reading from grade-level fiction, nonfiction text, and poetry.  Students will progress through the writing process as they plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish narrative, argumentative, and expository writing.

What Do I Need for Class?

The students are responsible for bringing materials to class. Materials include, but are not limited to, ELA binder, pencils, books, assignments, assignment journals, and any other materials that are necessary to complete all school work.

Every student is also REQUIRED to have a 3 ring binder and an “independent read” book.

The 3-ring binder will contain notes, homework, projects, and quizzes. The  “independent read” book will be needed for daily reading logs and quarterly book projects. The book must be approved.

If your absence is preapproved, you must see me BEFORE missing class.

Grades

The students’ mastery of the subject will be determined through evaluations that include classwork, tests, quizzes, homework, and projects.

If you have any questions about how the grades are calculated, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Classroom Procedures

Students will enter the room in a quietly and orderly manner. They will copy any assignments that are written on the board in their assignment journals. Students will then respond to the daily prompt in their in-class composition books. Immediately following writing down their homework and responding to the journal prompt of the day, students will immediately complete the bell work for the day. These procedures will occur daily.
