Mr. Sprumont’s 6th Grade Social Studies Class Syllabus

Class Overview

Welcome to Mr. Sprumont’s 6th grade Social Studies class!  The curriculum for this year is Ancient World History, which includes studying the history of our world all the way back to the earliest civilizations.  We will cover the ancient cultures of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Middle East, and Europe.  In addition to our particular focus on this time period, this class incorporates all elements of social studies, including discussions on currents events, lessons on important dates/events in history outside our curriculum, and much more.

Classroom Rules & Consequences

  1. Respect your classmates, yourself, and your teacher.
  2. Be on time, in your seat, with all necessary materials when the bell rings.
  3. Raise your hand for permission to speak or to leave your seat.
  4. Follow directions the first time they are given.
  5. The teacher dismisses class, not the bell.

If you choose to break a rule:

1st time - Discussion with teacher

2nd time - Office referral

Class Folder

All students are required to keep a class folder for notes, handouts, worksheets, etc.  This can be any sort of folder or binder; it would be helpful to have one with clips/rings to secure papers, as well as pockets for loose papers.  The class folder will be graded periodically to make sure students are keeping all necessary materials for study and reference.  This encourages organization and responsibility, as well as prepares you for years to come.

Grading

Our grading system is based strictly on the total number of points for a grading period.  A wide variety of grades are included to give students many different ways to learn and to display their knowledge.  Grades include (but are not limited to) tests, quizzes, homework assignments, in-class projects/activities, the aforementioned class folder, and, possibly, bonus activities.

In addition, at the end of each nine weeks grading period, students will be given a “Class Participation” grade.  This grade is to ensure that students come prepared to participate in class each day; students will lose points when they do not bring a pencil, textbook, class folder, etc.  As long as you come fully prepared each day, you should never lose a point for this grade.

Deadlines

This class will use “strict” deadlines.  This means that an assignment is due at the stated date/time, and there is no opportunity to turn it in late for a reduced number of points.  This goes for all assignments: homework, projects, etc.  Tests and quizzes missed must be made up ASAP.  All work not turned in on time becomes a “0.”

Absentee Policy

When you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you have missed.  I will be happy to fill you in on what happened in class while you were out and to discuss any make up work, but I will only do this when you approach me first.  Also, when you are out, any work which was assigned while you were in school and was due the day(s) you were absent is due.  For example, if you are in school on Monday and I assign homework which will be due Tuesday and you are then absent Tuesday, the homework is due whenever you return.

Hall Pass Policy

To maximize learning time in class, the use of our hall pass will be limited.  If you need to use the hall pass (to use the restroom for example), see me as soon as you get to class.  Once the bell rings, class begins and you will not be permitted to leave (unless it is an emergency).  Occasionally, there may be a few minutes at the end of class when an activity ends and you may also use the hall pass then.

Finally...

I’m looking forward to a great year in Social Studies class!  I encourage student participation and provide many means for this throughout the school year.  Feel free to share any information and/or questions you may have which relate to our class in any way, shape, or form.  I will be happy to discuss these with you.
