The Freeport Area High School Full Metal Jackets Robotics Team competed successfully at the preliminary competition held recently at BC3. The Team will move on to compete in the Bots IQ Final to be held at California University of Pennsylvania on April 26-27.
Mr. Dempster reported on the March 7 preliminary competition:
The preliminary competition started with The Full Metal Jacket facing an experienced Woodland Hills team and robot. After out maneuvering their bot, we won by decision. The next two matches were conceded by their teams, giving us two more wins.
In our penultimate match, the Full Metal Jacket was matched against a robot from a high powered team from Pine Richland High School. Their robot featured a weapon that was fabricated from carbide and that spun on the front of the robot as it attacked. Our driver, Dylan Arnold, maneuvered to the rear of their bot but could not flip it. After taking a few hits from their bot and suffering severe damage to the body of the robot, the Jacket was cornered and match went to Pine Richland.
As this was the first loss of the day for the Full Metal Jacket, our team repaired the bot as fast as they could and prepared to face a bot from Union High School. Despite only having one drive wheel, our robot lasted the entire match but lost by decision.
At the end of the preliminary competition, the Full Metal Jackets Team had a list of great results; it was noted by the Executive Director of Bots IQ that she “was very impressed that they had a fully functioning bot, on time and through inspection, for their first battle. I can honestly tell you that this may be the first time in 3 years I have seen a first year team achieve this level of success! Congratulations to you and the teams!” In addition, the team members worked cooperatively to repair their robot and did not have to concede a match due to technical issues.
