English as a Second Language (ESL)

Last Updated: 5/28/2022 4:37 PM

The Freeport Area School District shall provide a program to each student whose dominant language is not English for the purpose of facilitating the student’s achievement of English proficiency and the meeting the academic standards.  The program will provide the English Learner with instruction in the areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing in English by a certified ESL teacher.

Typically, this instruction provided in the form of small groups, pull-out instruction or support of students in their scheduled classes.  The instruction is aligned to the PA Core Standards.

Students are assessed annually, using the WIDA ACCESS 2.0 for ELLs test to monitor growth in language proficiency and to determine the continued need for support with English language development.  Students may exit the ESL program annually based upon the PA Department of Education requirements for exiting.

Parents will be informed of their child’s progress in the program.  Information, strategies and resources should be regularly shared with the parents to assure the child’s needs are being met.

The ESL teacher should collaborate with the child’s classroom teacher(s) to monitor progress in the general education curriculum.
